Berry Kickstart Rally
6 - 8 June 2014
Report by Craig Mill
We’ve just got back from the Berry Kickstart Rally, organised by the Shoalhaven Classic Motorcycle Club, and what a great weekend it was; Great hospitality, great camaraderie, great roads to ride with amazing views, and great bikes to see and hear.
The weather was perfect, slightly overcast and cool for most of the weekend just to remind us that this is a Winter rally, but only dipping down to a balmy 9 degrees overnight. For those of us in tents and swags it was an unexpected blessing.
Regardless of the lack of frostbitten fingers and toes, most of the Canberra mob still spent the evenings around the camp fire with Schnapps and wine and warming ales, entertaining each other with tales both tall and true.
The Shoalhaven crew were as welcoming as always, greeting us with spaghetti bolognese on arrival Friday evening and bacon and egg brekkie on Sunday to get us all revved up for riding. The rides were well planned and marshalled, and the meals and teas ensured that our Winter jackets fitted snugly by the end of each ride.
I think there were just over 80 classic bikes entered for the weekend, and of those our Canberra group made up 34. That’s a pretty good show of support from our club and it shows just how good a rally the Shoalhaven club provide for us all.
The rally dinner on Saturday night was well attended, and once again our club filled nearly half the seats. For those in the know, for the past few years we have attended the Berry dinner with a common dress up theme, and when the Shoalhaven group come to our rally they do the same. This year they came to our rally dinner as Vikings, and last year we went to theirs as Amish, so we couldn’t wait to show them our latest act.
We entered the dining hall en masse, all dressed in hunting hats, brandishing various hunting firearms (of the toy kind of course), announcing to the room that we were “Trophy Hunters” from Canberra, hoping to bag a few trophies (and a few raffle prizes too). With our numbers we had good odds of the latter at least.
Check out the rally photos to see how much fun was had at the dinner, and also how well some of our members did in actually bagging some trophies. They are listed below in the roll call.
I would like to wrap up by saying a big thank you to the Shoalhaven club for putting on such a great rally, and for making us feel like part of the family. If you have never attended this rally please make a note and don’t miss it next year.
